FIF 130 Understanding Film History

Course Description

An introduction to major figures and movements in film history that will foster an understanding of how each fits into the century-plus continuum of cinema. Each week's artist/period will be complemented by a readily-available suggested screening which is a particularly clear example of that movement. Class sessions will be discussions of the week's suggested reading and screening. The first sessions will include segments from documentaries of European and Canadian film history. Short clips from the suggested screening will be shown in class to focus discussion. Students will also be encouraged to include other examples from their viewing experiences. Students will develop an understanding and appreciation of how film has been informed by (and how film informs) its cultural context.
