Course Description

This course will introduce students to the various skills and techniques that are used to model relational databases. Also, students will learn data modelling techniques and methodologies that are used to build the conceptual, logical and physical schemas in a technology agnostic manner that will define the data elements along with the structures and relationships between them.

Course Details

Data modelling is a process used to define and analyze the data requirements in an IT project with the end result being a data model that can accurately describe the structure, manipulation and integrity aspects of the data stored within relational databases.

This course is for both business and IT professionals including business analysts, database developers and administrators, software developers, data warehouse and business intelligence developers, and project managers.

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Understand basics of the DAMA DM-BOK guidelines for Data Modelling
  • Create three distinct levels of data models
  • Apply data modelling skills to practical situations
  • Understand metadata and its purpose

Classes are held online in real time (Mountain Time) at the specified time and dates.

Students will require access to a computer with an Internet connection, a headset with speakers and microphone, webcam, and a monitor large enough to display multiple applications (or the use of two monitors).

This course uses:

  • Desire2Learn (D2L), an online learning management system. The instructor will post your course outline and other materials in D2L.
  • Zoom web conferencing software.
  • A virtual lab with VMware Horizon, a platform that provides access to virtual applications including the latest software for the course. You will be provided with a VMware account and login information once the course starts.
