FIF 117 Face To Faiths In The Mediterranean

Course Description

The Dark Ages in Europe can be contrasted with major periods of High Culture and Science in specific periods of Muslim rule. The Umayyad court at Cordoba, Roger II of Sicily's court in Palermo, Alfonso VI in Toledo and the early Ottoman Empire show how cultural accomodation and the transfer and exchange of ideas and culture can bridge the faiths. This course provides an overview of these aspects of Mediterranean history as a background to what seem like unreconcilable divisions in the contemporary world.
