HUM 301 Black Holes: Darkness And Light

Course Description

Black holes. What are they? How can something that is dark power active galaxies? What happens to careless explorers? In this course, virtually visit earth- and space-based observatories. Discuss the differences between observing in visible light, radio, ultraviolet, X-ray, and infrared. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? What other exotic objects can these observatories detect? Plan to read ahead and prepare for discussion and debate each week. Presentations on cutting-edge research, (including the instructor's own research) and a web component through which you can launch your own explorations are included.
