SPA 101 Spanish 1

Course Description

With little or no experience in Spanish, you are welcome in our interactive classes that focus on speaking the language. Saying basic phrases, pronouncing words correctly, asking questions and telling time are covered. There will be an introduction to articles, adjectives, pronouns and verbs in the present tense.

Course Details

Students of Spanish 1 will use Como se Dice as the text of instruction and may chose the customized version of Lessons 1 - 6 or the original version which contains Lessons 1 - 18. The course is delivered in a balanced, four-skills approach that adapts a range of teaching styles and course objectives. Grammar is presented in a clear, logical manner and the course focuses on practical communication in natural, high-interest contexts. Students who complete level 1 and wish to continue with Spanish are encouraged to look into the Certificate in Spanish Language and Culture.

Level 1 covers lessons 1 - 3, which include the following:

  • The alphabet
  • Cardinal Number 1-1000
  • Colours
  • Days of the Week
  • Months and seasons of the year
  • Subject pronouns
  • Present indicative of ser, regular -ar, -er, and -ir verbs,
  • Gender and number
  • Definite and indefinite articles
  • Telling time
  • Negative and interrogative sentences
  • Possession with de
  • Possessive adjectives
  • Descriptive adjectives: Forms, position, and agreement with articles and nouns
  • Present indicative of the irregular verbs tener and venir
  • The personal a
