HUM 220 Sexuality, Spirituality, and Ancient India

Course Description

Spirituality and sexuality formed a unified and essential aspect of ancient India. Focussing on two classic Indian texts, the Kama Sutra, the oldest Hindu textbook of erotic love, and the Mahanirvana Tantra, the best known of Tantric scriptures, gain an understanding of the relationship between  sensual love, erotic psychology, subtle energy structures of the human body, ceremonies, yogic practices and mantras for meditation. All these aspects will be discussed in a broad cultural and ethical context and parts of the authentic texts will be examined. The lectures will be illustrated by slides of ancient and medieval Indian art.
