HUM 142 God, Atheism, and Morality

Course Description

New Atheists such as Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens have influenced the thinking of many people in recent years. While traditional faiths have linked human values to a reality beyond this world, these men propose that we can live normal, moral lives without reference to God or 'divine meaning.' This course will review the history of humanistic thinking from the early Greek to modern philosophers. Using current material from Harris as a starting point in an exciting quest for ethical living today, we will investigate the strengths and weaknesses of a morality based on transcendent values.
