FIF 181 Latin Literature in Translation




Course Description

An introduction to Latin literature in the form of poetry and drama, with a focus on its social and cultural contexts. By analyzing key texts and looking at their representations  in ancient art, you will gain an understanding of their significance to ancient Roman society and culture. The course will focus on select examples of Latin literature in the period ranging from the 2nd century BCE to the 1st century CE. Course discussions will also include modern representations and interpretations of certain texts, such as the 1966 film, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, a modern interpretation of an ancient, Plautine comedy.
