HUM 134 Great Philosophers of Ancient Greece and Rome




Course Description

Much of who we are, our culture, the way we think and what we believe finds its foundation with the ancient Greeks and their great philosophers. This introductory course will familiarize you with the beginnings of Western philosophy and with the great ideas formulated by Greek and, later, Roman thinkers. We will look at the lives and ideas of such figures as: Thales, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Socrates, Epicurus, Plato, Aristotle, and Plotinus.

Course Details

This course will also examine the most influential schools associated with major figures in Greek philosophy. The Pythagoreans, Atomists, Sophists, Cynics, Stoics, and Skeptics will be covered. Throughout the couse, you will also study and discuss original concepts and approaches to reality, knowledge, and moral values.
