HUM 133 What is Gnosticism?




Course Description

Is Gnosticism an ancient Christian heresy reappearing in ever more subtle guises or is it essential Christianity restored to a rightful consideration?  Spurred by discoveries of ancient writings such as the Nag Hammadi texts, the Gospel of Thomas, etc., people have been challenged to rethink Gnosticism and standard explanations of Christian origins. This course will unravel old mysteries and traditional explanations.

 

Course Details

In recent times, Gnosticism has surfaced in the works of such disparate writers as Carl Jung, Dan Brown and even Marcus Borg. In this course, you will take a fresh look at early Christianity, looking at ancient sources and in-depth studies by modern writers and scholars such as Karen King, Elaine Pagels, and others.
