FIF 171 History of Arctic Exploration

Course Description

What happened to the Viking colonists? What happened to Franklin? How did the Inuit and other aboriginals react to the Europeans? Why is there a Bloody Falls? Since the 10th century Norsemen, European adventurers, explorers and scientists have ventured north in search of a northwest passage to the Far East, an open polar sea, the North Pole, lost comrades, scientific knowledge, or commercial profit. Survey various Arctic explorers and pioneers, focusing on their role in the discovery and development of the Canadian Arctic.
