BMC 285 - Fire Prevention and Safety
Course Description
Learn basic fire chemistry and behaviour, how fires start, and how they can be prevented, detected, controlled and extinguished. Gain crucial information about fire and building codes and related standards and organizations. Other fire safety and prevention topics include: basic principles of building construction and design; the critical elements of a fire safety program and plan; fire detection and suppression equipment and systems; the handling and control of dangerous/hazardous goods in the workplace; employer and employee responsibilities, liabilities and due diligence; and Fire Code enforcement.

Course Details
By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:
- Explain the relationship between Occupational Health and Safety and Fire Safety.
- Identify the various Acts and Regulations for purposes of application and jurisdiction.
- Integrate basic principles of fire chemistry into Health and Safety applications.
- Identify basic building construction and occupancy classifications.
- Describe the basic principles of building fire safety.
- Assess building integrity and safe egress.
- Identify hazardous activities and locations.
- Compare and explain fire safety equipment and systems.
- Develop and implement and inspection, testing and maintenance program for fire and life safety equipment and systems.
- Conduct a basic fire safety inspection of a building.
- Evaluate or develop a fire safety plan.
