Course Description

Auditing is a management tool used by organizations to verify that the organization is meeting its external and internal obligations with regards to health, safety and the environment. It is an essential element of a management system and a primary driver of continual improvement. The course explores the processes and procedures for various types of environmental health and safety audits, with an emphasis on auditing of regulatory compliance.

Course Details

Many tips and techniques for successful auditing and audit programs management will be provided.

For many, environmental health and safety auditing is a rewarding career choice. The course also examines auditing as a profession, discusses what it takes to become a certified auditor and explores emerging opportunities.

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Clearly define the scope and objectives of an audit.
  • Develop a useful audit protocol.
  • Conduct audit investigations, including effective interviews.
  • Write audit reports that will get results.
  • Act professionally and ethically during the course of an audit.
  • Plan an audit program to cost-effectively reduce organizational risk.

Notes

Students may take either BMC 281 Auditing of HSE Management Systems and Compliance or BMC 116 Management Tools and Techniques for Environmental Issues in their core component of the Environmental Management Certificate. If both courses are taken, one will be assigned to core and the other will be assigned as optional.
