Course Description

Analyze classroom assessment strategies, processes, issues and trends in the assessment of student language learning. Perspectives of assessment from learner, teacher, standardized tests and workplace needs will be addressed, as will the functions of formative and summative assessment. The role of assessment in learner motivation, accountability, and communication of learner ability will be addressed with reference to participants' real classroom experiences. Gain a working knowledge of large-scale, standardized language tests. Then focus on key criteria used in assessing and selecting materials. Familiarize yourself with the main types of materials currently available, and examine the range of teaching possibilities with these materials. Finally, experiment with developing your own materials to meet second language classroom needs.

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Recognize the principles related to aspects of test design.
  • Appreciate the various testing techniques and considerations relating to their design for language skills and systems.
  • Reflect on alternative methods of assessment for the ESL classroom.
  • Examine issues related to selecting and adapting classroom materials.
  • Develop their own classroom materials.

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Use terminology related to the principles of assessment and testing.
  • Analyze existing tests and make appropriate adaptations based on the principles of effective testing.
  • Discuss issues related to the principles of assessment and material development with colleagues in the field of ESL.
