HUM 127 Gender and Sexuality in the Ancient World

Course Description

Discover the fascinating role gender and sexuality played in the ancient world. Learn how, in the past, various social  factors  affected men's and women's attitudes and relationships with one another. Start with a brief study of Prehistoric cave art and Venus figurines. From there, examine gender roles in Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt, and then shift our  focus to ancient Greek and Roman civilizations with topics on daily life, aristocratic circles, warfare, weddings, and marriages. Also look at gender and sexuality in myth, religion and art. Through slides, films, lecture and discussion, discover how the modern world differs from, or is the same as, the past
