TRA 130 Jordan and Syria: An Historical and Archaeological Journey

Course Description

Ten thousand years of history, four mighty empires, and three great religions, all in two countries that are steeped in the cultures of the Middle East. Join us on our newly designed journey to Jordan and Syria, where we will explore prehistoric villages, ancient cities of the Persians, Greeks, and Romans, Byzantine Christian churches, and early Islamic mosques. Though our focus is on the history and archaeological remains of antiquity and the middle ages, we'll explore as well the complex political and religious elements of the area, and experience the souqs and shops patronized by the locals; a night in a desert encampment; camels, donkeys, and jeeps; contemporary and traditional Middle Eastern cuisine. And the friendliest people of the Mediterranean.
