FIF 159 Lives and Deaths of the Caesars

Course Description

Does Hollywood exaggerate? How accurate are I, Claudius and Quo Vadis? Does power always corrupt? Sex. Violence. What else? The colourful lives and - often - deaths of the Roman Emperors. Not just the famous and infamous ones in Suetonius - Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero - but also many fascinating good-bad later ones (Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius, Commodus, Elagabalus). Also, Constantine the first Christian emperor, Julian the last pagan one, and the self-styled Roman emperors of Byzantium who reigned to within 50 years of Christopher Columbus.
