HUM 118 Great Civilizations of the Ancient Near East: The Assyrians, Babylonians and Persians

Course Description

Explore the fascinating evolution of three great ancient civilizations representing many of the highest points of intellectual, technological and artistic development in the world - the Assyrians, the Babylonians and the Persians (from ca. 1000 BC to the conquest of Alexander the Great within Iraq and Iran.)  See how each civilization responded to and incorporated external cultural influences, including those of the Egyptians, the Phoenicians, the inhabitants of theTransjordanian kingdoms (Ammon, Moab and Edom) and  their neighbours to the West, the Israelites. You will explore how each of these empires arose, witness their achievements, and follow their downfall.
