FIF 629 Schizophrenia: Truths and Myths

Course Description

Schizophrenia is one of the most common, most feared, and most misunderstood mental disorders. This may be because -- for most of us -- our impression of schizophrenia has been formed by the media. Join us for a day of busting myths and revealing truths as we find answers to some of the most common questions about the disorder. What is the true association between schizophrenia and violence?  Why do people commonly think schizophrenia is the same as ‘split’ personality? What makes people hear or see things that aren't there? Why do some people with schizophrenia develop distorted beliefs? Our discussions will be based on current best knowledge of the disorder including the symptoms, causes, treatment, and historical background.  Come have your questions answered in this one day workshop and leave with a better understanding of what schizophrenia is and isn't.
