Year after year, perennials come back, filling our yards with colour! But, choosing the best varieties can be tricky. Discuss yearly maintenance, staking, colour themes, formal and informal plantings, and those herbaceous perennials you don’t want to live without. Focus on practicality and tried and true varieties that do well in Calgary’s chinook-driven growing conditions.
Course Learning Outcomes
Students will observe garden and landscape plants, focusing on their growth through the year. These classes will look at how plants compete with each other, how to assess prospects for their longevity and their suitability for a variety of garden locations. Gardeners can then use their experience and knowledge of plants to plan for the maximising of interest and the minimising of maintenance at all seasons. These classes will cover the elements necessary for creating an exciting mixed border with year-round interest, including thoughts on design and maintenance considerations, plus a palette of reliable plants.
