HUM 537 Amazing Creations of the Ancient World

Course Description

Did you know that Hero of Alexander invented a system that allowed temple doors to open automatically, but only after the would-be worshipper had 'paid' the entrance fee by burning an offering on the outside altar. From pyramids to pentekonters, dentures to dynamite, by way of the first analog computer and the inexhaustible wine cup, you will look at some of the amazing creations of the ancient world. Using archaeological, artistic and literary sources, you will look at some of the past’s innovations in the fields of architecture, warfare, engineering, medicine and more.
