FIF 616 Sport in Ancient Greece

Course Description

Have you heard about the Olympic Games and the marathon race? Did you know that only one originated in Ancient Greece? Did you know that stadium refers to the actual distance that the athletes ran? Did you know that stretching after sport is not a 20th century invention? If you want to know why we still throw the discus or wrestle, or if you want to know about the origins of many of our sports, come to this class. Learn about ancient sport modalities and their practice as well as the social status of athletes, and the role of sports in education and war. And yes, discuss the criticism of athletes by philosophers who did not make near as much money as athletes.
