HUM 529 Looking at Art: Forms and Ideas Since 1960




Course Description

Focus on acquiring and augmenting visual skills needed to understand non-objective art. Begin by looking at the Abstract Expressionist painting created by artists in New York City during the 1950s and 1960s, with a view to understanding its art historical heritage in the Modernist art of Europe. Pop art, Op art, Minimalism, Magic Realism, Conceptual art, and Post-Modernism will be presented in an entertaining, thought-provoking, and informative context. This course challenges entrenched views in a friendly and thoughtful way, so as to create a wider appreciation of a variety of art forms.
