HUM 514 Arab Spring: A New Phenomenon?

Course Description

The self-immolation of a Tunisian in 2010 sparked a wave of protests across the Arab world. Caught by surprise, governments in the West scrambled to find a solution to this turn of events. As a result, reactions were varied, ranging from calls for restraint to ignorance to condoning of the uprisings. Over two years later, the reaction is still uncertain. What is Arab Spring, why Arab Spring and who are the players? This course will examine the causes of this significant event and the current impact it has on not only the Middle East but around the globe. The use of social media in Arab Spring and the future of Arab Spring will also be discussed.
