HUM 510 Two Hundred Years of Verdi: Spotlight on Aida

Course Description

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of his birth, explore the life and work of Giuseppe Verdi (1813 - 1901), Italy's preeminent composer of 19th century opera. Discuss Verdi's style, influences, historical and cultural context, and political significance. Listen to specific examples of his work. Many major works will be covered in detail, including La Traviata, Otello, Falstaff, and others that operagoers are likely to encounter in this celebration year. Several weeks will be devoted to Aida, arguably the most celebrated and written-about work that Verdi composed.
