The essays on this website provide resources for those interested in research, theory, history, and the professional practice of university continuing education in Canada.
The theoretical essays locate continuing education within contemporary debates in social research, social theory, and the relationship between public institutions, politics, and social change. The historical essays examine the roots and evolution of university continuing education in Western Canada, with a special focus on Alberta and Saskatchewan. The practical essays address the core elements of university continuing education as a field of professional practice: program planning, needs assessment, evaluation, and student participation. In addition, there are a number of essays concerning fields of adult and continuing education that are not university-based: adult basic education, capacity-building for health promotion, and distance education for rural people in developing countries.
