Certificate in Professional Management (2010)
Specialization in Strategic Management (In Progress)

"When I began looking, I wanted a program that would give me the most bang for my buck; when you have a family at home and work full time, you really want to utilize your time as effectively as possible", says Theresa Cochran, a recent graduate of the Certificate in Professional Management.

"I felt that the Professional Management Certificate was very applicable for me...it lets you really hone in on what you value for your career goals."

With varied educational programs behind her, including certificates in personal fitness training, occupational health and safety, and holistic nutrition, Theresa wanted a program that would expose her to business and management. She had started an online degree program, but felt it wasn't meeting her needs. At the time, her goal was to move into a business role at the City of Calgary--a goal that has since been fulfilled.

"I probably wouldn't have the job I have now if I hadn't taken the professional management program," says Theresa, who works as the executive assistant to the director of waste and recycling services.

It took less than two years for Theresa to complete the certificate requirements. She took advantage of both classroom and online delivery, and took compressed classes whenever possible. When she needed extra time, she would get up early and utilize her lunch hours to complete her homework. She tried to choose times that didn't conflict with her children's lives.

"It was time consuming and the juggling was difficult at times; you have to make sacrifices sometimes, but it's worth it in the long run," says Theresa.

"I believe that continuous learning is necessary for growth, and I think you should always be planning for your future rather than waiting for your future to happen to you," says Theresa. "In order to do that, you have to prepare in advance. Continuing Education programs allow people to do that."
