"I'm using many of the strategies I was taught in my courses, and they're working for me." says Sherma Jeffrey-Ryan, a teacher in Calgary's Catholic school system and a recent graduate of the Teaching Second Languages (TSL) Level 1 Certificate with a specialization in Teaching English as a Second Language.
Sherma, who juggles her own learning with working and parenting, is a resource teacher. She works with students from grades one to nine, with learning disabilities. She also has a business offering ESL programs and tutoring to adults and children. "I wanted to learn about teaching adults, which is very different from teaching children."
A keen learner and a U of C alumna, Sherma has begun taking the courses that will lead to a Level 2 certificate, as well as courses leading to the Spanish Language and Culture Certificate. "I absolutely love learning," she says.
"Everything about my experience here has been great," says Sherma. "I would definitely recommend Continuing Education to anyone—and I have."
* The Teaching Second Language Professional Development Certificate has been replaced by the current Teaching Second Language certificate programs.
