Good Thinking

Rhandi Tyssen

Public Relations Management (2009)

"My certificate was crucial to me getting my new job," says Rhandi Tyssen, a business support team lead with City of Calgary Water Services. "It's a supervisory job, and I wouldn't have qualified to apply if I hadn't completed a management program."

Rhandi's decision to pursue a certificate happened somewhat unexpectedly when a Continuing Education brochure that outlined certificate programs arrived in her household mail.

"I started looking through it, and rather than look at the certificate names, I looked at the course lists. I discovered the courses that interested me the most were part of the Public Relations Management Certificate. That's when I realized I wanted to take PR."

Believing that a U of C credential would be a valuable addition to her resume, Rhandi enrolled in the program and completed it in two years of evening classes. Despite balancing her learning with family responsibilities and a full-time job, Rhandi found the program "Challenging—but not overwhelming."

In addition to her new knowledge and strong credential, Rhandi values her U of C experience and the people she met along the way. "I formed friendships that I still have," she says.
