Mildred Nielsen

Teacher Assistant Certificate (2009)

When Mildred Nielsen attended her graduation last June, she felt proud. "I had my kids come," she says. "I wanted them to see that knowledge doesn't just stop one day...that you can keep on learning."

Prior to enrolling in the Teacher Assistant program, Mildred had wondered if she'd missed out on something by not going on to post-secondary education when she was younger. As her two children grew, the stay-at-home mom began mulling over her options.

"I knew I wanted a Teacher Assistant program, and I wanted the U of C," says Mildred. "When I saw online was available, I thought the program was perfect for me." She went into it reasonably confident about her computer skills, but was pleasantly surprised by the realities of online learning. "I was somewhat savvy about computers, but I didn't expect the headsets, and the extent of interaction. For a shy person like me, it's a great way to learn. I was talking to people all over the world. One lady was in India...someone else in the Yukon."

Online learning also allowed for open communication with instructors. Mildred fondly remembers the motivation and support she received throughout the program, and the value of the practicum experience that was required for the program.

"The work experience allowed me to hone my skills in working with children with medical, physical, emotional and learning disabilities. It taught me that my involvement could be the fundamental element in a student achieving their academic goals. The program was enlightening, and led to me cultivating my shared philosophy of inclusive education.

"I started my journey on becoming a TA by enrolling in my first class in 2006. It has been a challenge trying to balance school, work and home, but the experience has made me a better person. Who knows what opportunities may come my way because of successfully completing the program. I do not see my work as a job, because I love what I do and that means I've never worked a day since I started."

Mildred completed the program in two and half years, but was hired to a position while still attending courses. "I am enjoying every day," she says. "The program absolutely served me well. I have already recommended it to others."
