Larisa Craig

Certificate for Emerging Leaders (2010)
ITIL Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management (2010)
Business Analysis Certificate (2011)

Ten years ago, Larisa Craig emigrated from Europe to Vancouver to be with her Canadian husband. She was giving up an 11-year career as a high school teacher in Latvia. On arriving in Canada, her first goal was to learn English and the second to find a new career.

"In the last 10 years, there has been an amazing transformation in me," says Larisa. "When I came to Canada, I didn't know English at all. This has been the most challenging period of my life, but it has also been incredibly rewarding."

When Larisa relocated to Calgary, just a year and a half after arriving in the country, she enrolled in education programs in information technology and accounting. She wanted to establish a new career path while she worked on her English. Ultimately, her achievements led to being hired to the Information Technologies department at the University of Calgary, where she continues to work as a security and account management team lead.

When Larisa was hired by U of C in 2006, she discovered Continuing Education. Immediately, she began enrolling in classes. "I always like to learn as much as I can...It's really good for you!" she exclaims.

Larisa has completed several courses and seminars through Continuing Education, including courses that led to the Business Analysis Certificate and the ITIL Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management. Both programs are offered in association with Procept Associates. Larisa also completed the Certificate for Emerging Leaders and various Business and Management courses. She continues to enrol in courses and seminars.

"Every course I take helps me a lot," says Larisa. "You learn from the instructors who are excellent professionals and facilitators...and you learn from the other people in class. They are always sharing their experiences."

On her Certificate for Emerging Leaders, she says, "I think everyone should take these courses...They help you grow in your personal and professional lives. Working closely with diverse groups of people, I have learned about myself, leadership, and Canadian culture."
