Dan Jones

Certificate in Adult Learning (2008)

Dan Jones, a 2008 graduate of the Certificate in Adult Learning, instructs in the sheet metal program at SAIT. He learned early in his career that being knowledgeable about a subject isn't necessarily enough to make you a good teacher.

"I loved being an instructor, but I felt I needed to learn about different styles of learning, and how to adjust to different students when necessary," he explains. His classes included a wide range of students—all ages, from varied cultural and education backgrounds.

Dan found his way to Continuing Education when it was recommended to him by a friend and respected colleague. "Now, I recommend it to others," he says. "It's a very relevant program, and I was always impressed with the level of professionalism of my instructors. There were some really wonderful people teaching."

Did Dan get what he need from his Continuing Education experience? "I certainly did," he says. "And more, I can see so many more opportunities coming from this."

Going to school while working and meeting his personal commitments required some juggling from Dan. Taking online courses was a definite advantage, he says.

After graduating from the CAL program, Dan went on to take the Provincial Instructor's Diploma from Vancouver Community College, and is currently exploring the possibility of going on to a Master's Degree.
