Corrine Sullivan

Human Resource Management Certificate (2010)

Corrine Sullivan was in the mood for change when she decided to tackle the Human Resource Management Certificate through Continuing Education.

While the program was challenging, Corrine was in the mood for more; she was in the mood for a transformation. So, while continuing with her studies, she enrolled in the University's TrymGym program (offered through Campus Recreation) to begin the lengthy process of losing more than a hundred pounds.

"I was working, going to school, and doing TrymGym at the same time," says Corrine. "It was a lot, but I did it with the help of my very supportive family."

Before she'd completed the HR Management program, Corrine applied for a new position with her then employer. Had she not been so close to completing the program, she couldn't have competed for the position. As it was, she won the competition and settled into a new role as an administrative manager with HR responsibilities. That position became a stepping stone to her role as an Administrative Services Manager with the Faculty of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary--a position that would have been out of her reach without her Human Resource Management Certificate.

To complete her certificate program, Corrine did courses both online and in the classroom. She especially enjoyed the compressed courses offered in the summer. "I highly recommend summer courses," says Corrine. "At first I worried about fitting so much into a short time, but they were great."

"I find I use what I learned all the time, and because I was working while going to school, I was able to apply the learning right away. I was actually using my real work in projects, so that was helpful too."

Corrine says she thoroughly enjoyed her experience in Continuing Education. "The instructors were fabulous--knowledgeable and very helpful...and I really felt that Cont Ed was very respectful of the adult learner's life...I would most definitely recommend Continuing Education."
