Certificate in Professional Management (2010), Certificate in Human Resource Development* (1995), Certificate in Personnel Administration* (1986)
"I don't think I'll ever stop taking courses," says Brent Gordon.
A graduate of three Continuing Education certificates—Professional Management, Human Resource Development*, and Personnel Administration*—Brent believes his commitment to continuous learning has been a key factor in his career and his progression to management.
"It's given me the knowledge and insight to help make my company an employer of choice," he says. For seven plus years, Brent—who is also a Certified Human Resources Professional—has worked for Midwest Surveys, a company—which for four consecutive years—has been ranked by the Globe and Mail as one of Canada's 50 best employers and an Alberta Top Employer for five consecutive years.
Currently, Brent is the company's Corporate Human Resources Manager meeting the HR needs of almost 370 employees. Despite having been a Continuing Education student since the early 1980s, Brent can't remember taking a course he didn't value. When he began his studies, he chose the University of Calgary because he believed it would offer the most comprehensive program. "I was looking for a higher order of learning and I believed in U of C. I knew it produced quality graduates."
Having just completed his last certificate, Brent is unsure what program to pursue next, but he is sure he is coming back for more. Looking back, he credits his achievements to a supportive family. "I needed that commitment from my wife and son to help get me through, especially in the early years."
One of the greatest benefits of his learning has been the contact with instructors and students. "It has been an absolutely positive networking experience," says Brent. "Most instructors come from industry, and they bring great examples to the classroom."
Plus, explains Brent, Human Resources is a relatively small community in Calgary and Edmonton, so it's not uncommon to see people from the industry in classes, or to meet someone in class and then see them at other industry events.
"Of course I recommend Continuing Education programs to others," he says. "I think people who don't take courses are missing out on opportunities. Taking courses can give you so much more confidence in your abilities. It can help you learn to lead. I really think Continuing Education courses provide a great development opportunity."
* Because Continuing Education programs evolve to address the changing needs of industry, Personnel Administration and Human Resource Development are no longer available. Currently, in this field of study, Continuing Education offers the Human Resource Management Certificate.
