Annet Chu

Teaching Second Languages Certificate (2010)

Today, Annet Chu is both a teacher and a student. She is teaching English as a second language at a local college and taking online classes working toward an MA in Cultural Studies and Educational Studies.

Annet says she loves her newfound career, and looking back, she gives Continuing Education full credit for establishing her path.

"Before enrolling in the TSL program, I didn't know what I wanted as a career. I'm teaching now, and I love it. The program gave me an opportunity to discover my passion for education," says Annet, a University of Calgary Alumnus with a BA in Social and Cultural Anthropology.

Annet's interest in education began unexpectedly when her employer offered her an opportunity to teach a life skills class. That experience led her to apply for English as a second language (ESL) teaching positions; then, she found an education program that would develop her skills in the classroom plus give her credentials to add to her resume. She found everything in the Continuing Education certificate program: Teaching Second Languages specializing in Teaching English as a Second Language.

Having both a U of C degree and a TSL certificate, Annet qualified for certification through TESL Canada, a federation dedicated to maintaining high standards for Canadian ESL teachers.

"I chose this program partly because it was recommended to me, and it was acknowledged by TESL Canada," says Annet, who admits to having some initial concerns about taking courses online. "At first, I decided to take one course to see what I thought of online learning. It was fabulous. I've learned that online courses fit perfectly into my busy schedule."

Annet says she truly values the knowledge she gained from the program. "Even now, I refer back to my notes and textbooks, and occasionally I would send emails to the instructors from my program to ask for advice," she says.

Annet has maintained connections with her instructors, all of whom were excellent, she says. One person that stands out for her is her practicum instructor. "Sally Beetham Tilley was extremely supportive, and her classes were always interactive. I felt lucky to have her as a mentor."
