Tuition support is considered a non-taxable benefit offered to employees of the University of Calgary. Employees should NOT request T2202A's for courses that were paid via tuition support unless those courses were taken by their spouse or dependents.
The Canada Revenue Agency has developed guidelines on employer-paid educational costs to help one determine if there is a taxable benefit for employees. When the training is mainly for the employer's benefit, there is no taxable benefit whether or not the training leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate. A taxable benefit may apply when the training is mainly for the employee's benefit. For more information, click here.
