Seminar: Calgary 1912

This presentation will examine many aspects of Calgary in 1912, at the height of its first big boom, when the city expanded tenfold in just ten years, from roughly 4,000 to over 40,000 people. Many Calgary landmarks are connected with this period: the "Old City Hall" (1911), Central Memorial Park Library (Calgary's first public library, 1912), the Lougheed Building and Grand Theatre (1912). This period also marked the establishment of the first University of Calgary (1912), the hosting of the first Calgary Stampede (1912), and the drawing up of the "Mawson Plan" to guide the city's future development.

Instructor: Donald Smith taught Canadian history at the University of Calgary from 1974 – 2009. Now a professor emeritus of history he is an active member in the Calgary Association of Lifelong Learners.
